Project Assessment and Planning
Our subject matter experts received a service request from the industrial plant in Mauldin, SC for the security camera system installation and IT network infrastructure setup. To gather the customer requirements a site survey was conducted to:
- Determine the number of Cameras and the Coverage Areas: Confirm the desired number of cameras, key coverage areas and optimal mounting locations with the onsite point of contact (POC).
- Identify cable path: Evaluate structured cabling paths for all new Cat6 Ethernet runs, including routing options through attic, crawlspace, or wall penetrations (if there existing or need to create new one). Estimate total cable lengths and identify where PVC conduit, junction boxes, or surface-mount hardware may be required.
- Plan central equipment setup: Finalize installation location for the network equipment (e.g., UniFi PoE switch, NVR, UPS), ensuring power and network availability.
- Listings of installation materials and equipment: Complete list of materials and equipment required.
- Develop visual documentation: Prepare a floor plan sketch showing proposed camera positions, cable runs, and equipment zones, if needed. Take clear, labelled photos of all proposed mounting areas and routing paths for the record and reference.
Following the site visit, a detailed installation plan was sent to the customer for review and approval. Once approved and all necessary materials were procured, we coordinated the installation schedule with our IT field engineers in Baltimore, MD.
Project Execution
Our team of IT field technicians arrived onsite to perform the following scope of work:
1. Cat6 Cable Drop Installations
The first phase focuses on installing all necessary network cabling to support the camera infrastructure and access control devices. A total of 24 Cat6 plenum-rated cable runs will be deployed throughout the facility. These drops include connections for
- 19 IP security cameras
- 1 Thermal camera
- 1 Wireless access points
- 1 Access control door
- 1 Compact machine
- 1 TV monitoring display
Cables are routed through appropriate pathways, such as attics, ceiling spaces, conduits, and overhead cable trays, ensuring minimal disruption to existing infrastructure. Each cable run was tested, labelled and terminated at the:
- Main Distribution Frame (12 cameras, 1 TV, 1 access control door)
- Intermediate Distribution Frame (8 cameras, 1 wireless access points, 1 compact machine)
Proper cable support systems, including J-hooks, raceways, or trays were used to maintain clean, secure routing paths and prevent signal interference or strain.
2. MDF–IDF Fiber Backbone
To ensure reliable high-speed connectivity between the MDF and IDF network zones, a 420-foot pre-terminated fiber optic cable is installed to act as the system’s backbone. This fiber link supports the data traffic generated by the camera network and provides a stable communication channel between the primary equipment areas.
They securely route and protect the Fiber along its pathway, install SFP+ LC transceivers on both ends, and connect them to the network switches. They then test the Fiber for continuity, signal strength and transmission quality, documenting the results to confirm that the backbone link meets industry standards.
3. Security Camera and Equipment Installation
After completing the cabling, our professional installers mounted and secured 19 wired IP cameras and 1 thermal camera at strategic locations throughout the facility. They fine-tuned camera positioning and angles in collaboration with the client to ensure full coverage of entryways, hallways, office areas, warehouse sites and outdoor zones.
They installed a 65-inch TV using articulating TV mount to provide real-time video monitoring of the facility.
IT field engineers installed two network equipment racks, one for the MDF and one for the IDF. They assembled two 16-port patch panels and two PoE switches for each rack. They installed a single UPS and power strips in the IDF, while the MDF drew power from the existing UPS. The team configured and integrated the Network Video Recorder (NVR) at the MDF to manage and store video footage from the IP cameras.
They also strategically installed a wireless access point to provide reliable wireless connectivity in the designated area of the facility.
They installed an access door control unit as part of the security system. The device regulates entry to the designated area and integrates with the overall surveillance and network setup to enhance security monitoring and access logging.
Our team brought all cameras and equipment online, then verified camera functionality, network connectivity and video quality across all zones. During the final walkthrough, the client confirmed that the installation met all coverage requirements and security expectations.
